Since the size of your stomach has shrunken considerably since your surgery, the amount of calories and macronutrients you consume will be different than that of a person who has not had the surgery. The following guidelines apply to the majority of gastric sleeve patient once they have fully recovered from their surgery.

CALORIES: 1,000 to 1,200 per day

PROTEIN: about 60-70 grams per day. This amount can be slightly lower or higher, depending mostly on your height. To see exactly how much protein you need click here. The recommended daily allowance is 0.8 grams per kg of body weight, or about 0.4 gram per pound, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Our bodies need this amount of protein in order to perform their basic functions, regardless of whether you had a gastric sleeve surgery or not.

The best sources of protein include fish, chicken, lean beaf, egg whites, greek yogurt, tofu, beans, lentils, nuts, and seeds. To read more about protein intake for after gastric sleeve surgery we have a detailed article that you can read here.

Protein is a nutrient that is needed at constant levels. Carbs and fats, on the other hand, are energy sources and can be adjusted more easily to fit your new lifestyle. People who exercise intensively may need a bit more, so keep that in mind. To read more about exercising after gastric sleeve surgery click here.

CARBS: 110 grams to 130 grams. Carbs are the body's preferred source of energy. They play an essential role in keeping our brain and body functioning properly. It is important to focus on good carbs such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes. We understand there are several common misconceptions regarding carbs, so we created an easy to understand article that explains everything you need to know about them (click here for it).

FAT: 40 to 50 grams. Fats are another source of energy for our bodies. Like with carbs, it is important to differentiate good fats from bad fats. Focus on healthy fats such as nuts, seeds, avocado, coconut, and oils. Oils are pure fat and therefore are the highest calorie-dense food out there, so they should be consumed in moderation when cooking or when used as dressings. To learn more about dietary fat we have a detailed article here.

We base all of our meal plans and recipes on these guidelines. Our dietitian and nutritionist team have carefully created these guidelines in accordance with national recommendations. We have worked together with many gastric sleeve patients and this is by far the best approach to achieving long term results.
